The Brief

Project Background

Great Places Housing Group embarked on a significant development project in Greater Manchester, specifically at Laystall Street in the heart of the city. The project aims to deliver high-quality affordable housing, contributing to Manchester’s ongoing urban regeneration efforts. Given the area’s dense infrastructure and growing residential demand, fire safety was a critical component of the development.

To ensure compliance with fire safety regulations and provide an effective emergency response system, Dry Risers Direct was entrusted with the installation of a robust dry riser system. Our role was to design and implement a solution that met the requirements of BS9990:2015 while accommodating the specific challenges posed by an inner-city construction site.

Challenges & Approach

This project required a carefully planned two-phase approach due to the site’s location within Greater Manchester’s busy city centre, where access restrictions and coordination with other contractors were essential.

1. Underground Feed Installation – The first phase involved laying underground pipework to establish a stable and efficient water supply for the dry riser system. This stage required close collaboration with utility providers to avoid disruptions to essential services.
2. Vertical Feed Installation – The second phase will on be extending the system vertically throughout the multi-storey development. The project includes a single system measuring 12 metres with 10 outlets.

• Noise & Environmental Considerations – Ensuring that works adhered to local regulations to limit noise and dust pollution.
• Site-Specific Safety Compliance – Regular inspections to align with Greater Manchester’s stringent building and fire safety guidelines.
